Aldworth Philharmonic Orchestra and Reading Youth Orchestra extend a warm welcome to join their friendly players for an hour of short extracts from works in the evening concert, as well as special pieces written to be accessible to younger listeners. There'll even be a special guest apperance by Frederike Möller, a pianist from our twin town of Düsseldorf who specialises in the wonderful sound of toy pianos!
Presented by members of APO's free fan club for 5-15 year olds, APO Young, the concert will take place in a relaxed atmosphere suitable for all the family.
The Pantry Café will be open before the concert until 7pm, serving sandwiches, jacket potatoes, soup & cakes. Plus a selection of hot and cold drinks.
Aldworth Philharmonic Orchestra an award-winning, famously-friendly, welcoming and inclusive orchestra based in Reading.
We present various concerts throughout the year plus workshops, festival performances and other events. As well as giving great performances, we try to dispel the myth that classical music is stuffy and elitist.
Our programming is adventurous, with a wide range of styles from a variety of periods and composers, and less-known works alongside the popular classics. We especially love performing music by living composers, and have commissioned nearly 30 new works from our young composers award winners over the last 15 years.
Reading Youth Orchestra is one of the oldest youth orchestras in the country. It was founded before the end of the war, in 1944, and from very small beginnings it soon developed into a group big enough and confident enough to undertake a concert tour to Holland. Indeed, its first visit to Germany, where it performed to an audience of two thousand, was made as early as 1949.
Since those early days the Youth Orchestra, run by the Youth and Community Service, went from strength to strength. Former members are now to be found in many professional orchestras and teaching positions across the country. In the 1990s RYO performed in the Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and in St John’s Smith Square. In the 2000s funding for RYO was withdrawn and it became independent, supported by the Eureka! Foundation and the University of Reading to keep running.
The Orchestra exists today still with an emphasis on its youth and community roots – giving members responsibility and opportunities to develop musically and socially.
